Web design FAQ

Take a look at some of the most commonly asked questions regarding setting up a website.

If you have a question that hasn't been answered already, just ask!

How much does it cost to set up a website?

The actual cost of the website can vary greatly, depending on your requirements and where you look.

Website templates can be purchased online for as little as €50 but you’ll more than likely need the expertise of a web designer to actually get it it up and running. These templates can also be quite restrictive in terms of how much you can edit them, while also being very bulky which will slow your website down and needlessly increase your bandwidth usage.

Custom websites which are designed to your specific requirements would cost more but would provide a vastly superior end product when compare to templates. A good starting point for a custom brochure website would be €800 – €1000. However, this is subject huge variance depending on where you look. The price would tend to creep up as you add more and more custom features like product catalogs, client testimonials or completed project galleries.

eCommerce websites would obviously be another step up, but probably not as much as you would expect. Open source eCommerce solutions such as WooCommerce or Magento provide the ability to sell online while also being relatively easy to set up and customise. A starting point for an eCommerce site would be around €1200. With an eCommerce site you also have other considerations such as payment gateways and SSL certificates which will add to the cost.

In any case you’ll also need website hosting and a domain name. Both of these are typically paid annually and €100 per ear should easily cover both for a basic website. The cost of hosting can rise if you have extra requirements or are running a very busy website.

How long does it take to set up a website?

A standard brochure website should take about 3-4 weeks to complete.

Template websites can be completed within a week if all your content is ready to go from the beginning.

Delays can occur if the client is slow in preparing content, offering feedback or approving designs.

What is website hosting?

Website hosting is a service which allows your website to be viewed on the internet. The internet is made up of a network of computers (servers), which store information and allow it to be accessed from anywhere else on the internet. Web hosting is essentially reserving your own little piece of internet server space, which allows your website to be visible online.

Web hosting is an essential part of running a website, so it’s something you should ask your web designer about before setting up your website.

What is a website domain name?

A domain name is the name of your website (yourwebsite.ie). This is another essential element in setting up a website. Your choice of domain is entirely up to you but it should reflect the name of your company. Ideally your domain should be as short as possible while still being descriptive and memorable to the user. Domain names can be purchased online from domain registrars and are relatively cheap (around €25 per year should cover it)

What is mobile responsive website design?

Mobile/responsive website design is a way of building a website which allows it to adapt to the screen size of the particular device the website is being viewed on.

This technique offer a vastly superior user experience when compared to websites which are not responsive. Mobile responsive websites are also given a slight preference by search engines as they appreciate that users on phones and tables would prefer to be shown websites that will work well on their device.

How do I use my business name as my email address?

To use your business name as your email address (eg: info@yourcompanyname.ie), the first thing you need to do is register your chosen domain name. Domain names can be registered online through domain registrars. Once you have registered your domain, it’s your property and you’re free to set up any email address with it.

In most cases you can set up your new email address with the same company that you registered the domain with. However, it’s also likely that you will also need to purchase some form or hosting from them to facilitate your new email account.

You can also set up your email using a third party service such as Google Apps for business. This way you’ll still need to register your domain but you’ll simply link it to Googles web based email system which provides the exact same interface and functionality as Gmail but will use your domain name instead of gmail.com.

In any case, you’ll more than likely need some technical knowledge of domain administration (Name servers, DNS & MX records etc).
